Marilynn Gottlieb was born in Santa Rosa, California and graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Her coursework included studio art, art history and photography classes from Stanford University and IAU in Aix-en-Provence France. She obtained a degree in Medical Photography from Bellevue College and worked as a medical photographer at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.
Ms. Gottlieb considers herself an artist who uses photography as a starting point for artwork. Finding traditional photography, especially in the digital world, void of any hands-on aspect and lacking the unique result of other kinds of artwork, her goal is to create original pieces. She reinforces the theme of each piece by incorporating other art techniques such as collage and paint, as well as using substrates other than paper such as metal plates, glass and plexiglass. The inclusion of relevant reclaimed materials often produces a three-dimensional piece.
